How to Grow an Herb Garden in Pots
For Christmas I got the Toysmith Grow Your Own Herb Garden Kit, so I can grow an indoor herb garden. The kit is pretty simple and all you really need is peat pellets, herb seeds and a pot.
I’m going to demonstrate the process using the kit I got, since it’s here and available. But again, if you just get the seeds, pellets and a pot, you’ll be good to go. Plus, it’ll be cheaper.
Setting up Your Herb Garden
This Italian Herb garden kit comes with a terracotta pot, 3 packets of seeds and 3 peat pellets. And before you think there are no instructions in this thing, check the back of the box. The instructions are there. I almost panicked myself!
The first thing you need to do is soak the peat pellets. I soaked them on a deep plate and added about 1/3 of a cup of water for each pellet.
Soak them for a while until they expand and they are wet all the way through.
Then I added 2 of the peat pellets to the bottom of the pot. In each opening, I added one kind of seed…about 6 seeds per type of herb. Interestingly enough, they called this an Italian Herb Garden, but the oregano is clearly labelled as Greek. It’s not a big deal to me, but maybe to some purists.
Once the seeds were added, I spread the rest of the peat soil over the seeds.
Then it was time to place the pot in a sunny place. Our sunniest place is in the living room window and I had to squeeze the pot onto the sill (crossing my fingers the kids don’t knock it down, but they’ve been warned). Also, I placed an old plastic lid underneath because the pot does have a hole on the bottom, so be warned.
That’s it for now. I’ll update you on the progress and post back here. If you want to grab the herb garden kit, instead of buying your own pieces, it’s available on Amazon.
