Cooking Conversions & Measurements – What Do They Mean?
I have received a few questions about converting measurements in recipes. While conversions aren’t always straightforward (ex. converting a weight measurement to mass, depends on the type of ingredient you’re measuring), here are some tips and guidelines to help you.
- Measurement Abbreviations: C = Celsius / c = cup / F = Fahrenheit / g or gr = gram / kg = kilogram / mL = milliliter / L = liter / oz = ounce / t or tsp = teaspoon / T or tbsp = tablespoon /
- Approximate Weight Conversion: 1 ounce equals 30 grams.
- Approximate Temperature Conversion: 350 Fahrenheit equals 180 celsius. 375 F is 190 C. 400 F is 200 C. 450 F is 230 C.
- Approximate Metric Conversion: 1 teaspoon is 5 milliliters (mL). 1 tablespoon is 15 mL. 1 cup equals 250 mL . 1 quart is 1 liter (L). 1 gallon is 4 L.
- Flour Conversion: 1 cup = 4.5 oz = 128 grams
- Rolled Oats Conversion: 1 cup = 3 oz = 135 grams
- Butter Conversion: 1 cup = 8 oz = 225 grams
- Sugar Conversion: 1 cup = 7 oz = 200 grams
- Brown Sugar Conversion: 1 cup = 7.7 oz = 220 grams
- Unsifted Icing Sugar Conversion: 1 cup = 4.5 oz = 128 grams
- Vegetable Oil Conversion: 1 cup = 7.7 oz = 220 grams
- Shortening Conversion: 1 cup = 7.5 oz = 212 grams
Hope that makes using some recipes easier.
